Friends,
My three-year-old had pinkeye plus an ear infection this week. People's instinctive reaction is to say something like “oh no, poor little guy, I hope he’s okay”. He’s fine, thank you. Mom and dad on the other hand have to take turns nose-blowing, medicating and comforting while trying to keep the other day job afloat. Did I mention not sleeping?
To all the parents who are going through Covid/RSV/flu season, stay strong.
See you in two weeks,
Florian
Weekly Wisdom
❄ Cold Exposure: Wim Hof trained his body to resist extreme temperatures. He climbed Kilimanjaro in nothing but shorts and sandals. I have a weird fascination for how much we seem to be able to stretch our abilities so I had to read his book, The Wim Hof Method. While it does occasionally read like the ramblings of an enlightened guru, his story is truly fascinating and his energy infectious. I’ve been putting his method into practice and while the breathing doesn’t seem to do much for me (yet), I’ve become addicted to daily cold showers.
🌍 Global Cooling: If the only thing you read about climate change is the news, you probably feel like we are headed towards human extinction and I can’t blame you for it. Fortunately, reality is more nuanced. My colleague Zeke Hausfather does a fantastic job explaining where we are today and why there is reason to be cautiously optimistic.
🔍 Career Crossroads: Ladders. Paths. Stepping stones. These are all words we frequently use to describe careers. Reality is rarely that linear. This piece gives practical and research-backed advice on what works when we find ourselves at a crossroad of changing jobs and figuring out what’s next.
Lateral Thought
“The cold is a teacher. It’s merciless. You don’t picnic when you go into the cold. You don’t think about your mortgage or your kid’s braces or your divorce; you just survive.”
Wim Hof
oh no, poor little florian and wife, I hope they is okay :')
